Back to the Schoolyard
Nancy Brooks

I walk the path where
We used to play
Swing sets swaying
In the light of day
Laughter lingers in
The autumn air
Whispers of friendship
Everywhere
Pencils
Books
And paper planes
Running down the hallways
Calling names
Every corner holds
A secret smile
Moments of joy
That lasted a while
Back to the schoolyard
Where we dreamed
Every echo
Every sunlight
Gleamed
Memories frozen
Yet alive in me
Childhood laughter
By the old oak tree
Morning bells
And classroom songs
Where we all
Felt we could belong
Time has passed
But I still see
The girl I was
So wild and free
The world moved on
We grew up fast
But those golden days
Will always last
In faded photos
And memories bright
The schoolyard lives
In my heart tonight
Back to the schoolyard
Where we dreamed
Every echo
Every sunlight gleamed
Memories frozen
Yet alive in me
Childhood laughter
By the old oak tree
